Finding
a niche in the crowded world of retail maybe as difficult as
finding really comfortable, stylish shoes, but Judy Typaldos
and Camille Kessler have managed to do both.
Four years ago,
they opened Piazza Della Sole, a shoe boutique in Montclair
that is committed to bridging the gap between comfort and style. “Women
like
to
look fashionable and be comfortable no matter what they do
for a living,” says Typaldos. “If you’re
a stay-at-home mom or a big executive, you want to look good,
and you don’t want your feet to hurt.”
When Typaldos and Kessler, both in their early fifties, decided
to embark on new careers in retail, they drew on the skills
they’d developed
in their previous work. Typaldos had spent 25 years as a social
worker, and Kessler had run an interior design business.
“There hadn’t been a new shoe store in town in
eighteen years,” says Typaldos, and from there, Piazza
Della Sole began to take form. Their inventory includes approximately
25 shoe manufacturers—including a bevy of hard-to-find
European designers—handbags, executive briefcases, and
a wide variety of socks, plus jewelry by local designers.
