FOCUS ON FAMILY: Ila and Vance Gillenwater with their children, Harrison and Claire, at the Wagner Farm Arboretum, where Ila is a volunteer. It’s “a lovely place offering gardening opportunities, classes or just a free stroll through one of the most picturesque spots in the state,” she says. The arboretum hosts various events—including a Halloween spectacular called Brite Nites (with illuminated pumpkins in the children’s garden and a haunted house), a Holiday Boutique and Spring Blooms with plants and local artist.

Why Warren?  Warren has the perfect mix of rural vistas, winding roads and easy access to shopping. Our home provides the ideal combination of privacy within a close-knit neighborhood. We enjoy hiking in our woods behind the house, and yet the children can run across the street to play with neighbors. I love that when I am in town, I run into two or three people that I know. This really lends to a feeling of community. And the schools are some of the best in the state.

Favorite local spots? My husband and I love to go out. Stone House is a favorite. We adore their terrace for summer cocktails, and the sushi is divine. Silk Road offers us something different with Afghan food. My girlfriends and I fancy Nuray’s for lunch. My son frequents the Comic Cafe for Pokémon fun, and my daughter chooses Country Squire diner every time. I can find a nice hostess gift as well as great advice at Edgewood Pharmacy. A&G Deli has the best sandwiches around.

Tell us more about your town: My kids participate in the township teams and camps. Annual town events including the Expo fair, the car show, the fishing derby, and the weekly music and movies are highly anticipated by my whole family. When I moved to Warren, my son was two weeks old and I knew no one. I was in the nail salon one day and a woman recommended the Moms Club of Warren, a club for at-home moms and their children. This club was a lifeline for me and introduced me to some of my best friends.
