I recently had the pleasure of meeting the 2009 Miss USA, Kristen Dalton, at a fundraiser hosted at the Jimmy Choo boutique in Short Hills. A portion of the evening’s sales went to the Kerry Rhodes Foundation (kerryrhodes.com), founded by the New York Jets star of the same name. The foundation provides financially depressed high schools with student resources and programs.
At the fundraiser, Miss USA and I had an amazing time checking out the gorgeous shoes and handbags, and it was fun to hear her take on fashion. “My style is classic and casual, but always with a touch of sparkle,” Dalton said.
“I love to wear leggings, tunics, boots, and chunky rings—that’s my favorite look! The single things I choose from my closet over and over again are my brown suede wedge boots because they are comfortable, give me height, and go with so many outfits.
“My tip to looking great without too much fuss is to wear an outfit that accentuates your best features, like a color that makes your eyes pop—something that makes you feel confident and beautiful,” she added.
The pageant provides Miss USA with an extensive wardrobe, and Dalton enjoys wearing new combinations. “My stylist—how fun that I get a stylist as Miss USA, right?—knows my preferences and what I feel good in. She is amazing at finding clothes for any occasion. I’m not afraid to branch out and try new looks, so we enjoy playing dress up and experimenting with the latest trends.”

Fun Find
After enjoying a recent lunch in Bernardsville, I strolled down a quaint alley across from the movie theater and discovered Le Fashion Cottage (908-251-2388; 10 Minebrook Road), a tiny gem of a shop. Former fashion-model agent Judy Linton is the owner/buyer/stylist, and her inventory is tres chic. The selection is limited—purposely. Labels include Prada, Giorgio Fendon, and Colcci. It’s always a treat to stop in for cookies and conversation at Le Fashion Cottage!
Falling in Love with Spring
A few weeks ago, at a Park Place event, I was asked, “What’s your favorite look for spring?” As a style editor, I’m incredibly fortunate to have access to fashion events and trade shows that continually introduce exciting new trends. So I find it challenging to answer this question succinctly.
What’s my favorite look right now? I adore strappy sandals, chunky platforms, and lace-up brogues. And ruffled blouses, cashmere cardigans, funky vests, and “utility chic” bomber jackets are all very hot.
Flirty, casual dresses are perfect this spring. Instead of relying on separates, consider the sweet simplicity of choosing a single frock from your closet. It’s fast and easy! Try adding a skinny belt, blazer, and layers of jewelry for added punch.
Springtime skirt lengths are short and sassy, but if you prefer to show less leg, opt for a longer, snugger pencil skirt. I’m seeing lots of loose-fitting cargo pants, cropped chino trousers, and skinny, dark jeans, too—all amazing looks!
Just don’t get me started on accessories because they’re my favorites. Long scarves, hipster eyewear, slouchy hobo bags, vintage jewelry—especially anything in orange, pink, lavender, yellow, black, or white—paired with a luxe metallic or bold geometric pattern. Oo-la-la. This is definitely the season for feminine looks. Buy what you love and have fun with it, girls! Better close for now—just thinking about all the possibilities is making me light-headed. Spring is in the air, and it’s so nice to be in love with all the pretty new styles!
