Rod Ryan has a vision for constant growth. The Far Hills resident started selling Open Road brand recreational vehicles, used cars and Honda motorcycles out of a converted two-bay garage at 50 Route 1 in Edison in 1972.
Nearly 40 years later, the CEO of Open Road Auto Group (headquartered in Bridgewater), owns and operates 17 dealerships throughout the metropolitan area—12 in New Jersey and five in New York.
The New Jersey locations offer customers value-driven and luxury import brands, including Acura, BMW, Honda, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mini and Nissan.
Ryan acquired two new dealerships in New Jersey (Mercedes-Benz in Bridgewater and BMW Newton) this past year. But his commitment to change doesn’t end with business.
In 2008, he started investing in the planet by building a new service facility for Open Road Honda in Edison and two new state-of-the-art BMW dealerships, one in Morristown and one in Kenvil with “green footprints.”
All three locations consume zero energy to heat the buildings, and all oil, brake fluid and transmission fluid drained daily from in-service vehicles is stored in a 5,000 gallon tank and then recycled and burned to provide the building with heat during the winter months. “When we were designing these facilities, it was very important to me that Open Road be a responsible member of this community,” Ryan says. “Not only do we focus on investing back into the dealerships to better serve our customers, but we’re dedicated to being part of the green movement and the preservation of our planet.”
