A Grand Occasion

The Grand Café

If you hope to reserve a table for two at the Grand Café in Morristown for Valentine’s weekend, you better book early—this bastion of fine dining seems to be on everyone’s short list of most romantic spots in northern New Jersey. In fact, Zagat calls it “one of the last outposts of civility…where the waiters still wear tuxedos…and make you feel like royalty.”

That seems to be the consensus among those who flock to the Grand Café for cozy suppers and unhurried business lunches. Here, contemporary, elegant dining is the order of the day, as personally overseen by owner Desmond Lloyd, past recipient of the New Jersey Restaurant Association’s Restaurateur of the Year award Lloyd, who along with his wife, Alice, has operated the Grand Café since 1981, was born and raised in Dublin, and honored as the grand marshal of last year’s Morristown Saint Patrick’s Day Parade. So it comes as no surprise that his eatery’s decidedly French cuisine is served up with a healthy dollop of Irish vim.

Among the Grand Cafe’s romantic Valentine’s desserts is creme brulee with fresh fruit accompaniment.

Executive chef Quang von Hong prepares classic favorites such as escargot served in garlic-basil butter, warm Maine lobster salad over angel-hair pasta, potato-crusted cod in beurre blanc, and baked-to-order chocolate soufflé—the Grand Café’s signature dessert. Perfect pairings abound in a wine cellar brimming with carefully selected possibilities.

The main floor is warm and inviting with sublime lighting, coffered ceilings, and pristine pink table linens, while the renovated second and third floors—especially charming with dark wainscoted walls and elegant fireplaces—host corporate events, holiday parties, weddings, and rehearsal dinners for groups of 100 or fewer. Off-premise catering also is available.

In warm-weather months, the adjacent Grand Allee offers alfresco dining in a petite courtyard replete with white wrought-iron bistro furniture and baskets overflowing with flowers and ivy.

That’s precisely why, for so many local gourmands, the Grand Café is a perennial favorite, season after season. Lunch is served Monday through Friday from 11:45 am to 2 pm, and dinner is presented Monday through Friday 5:30 to 9 pm and Saturday 5:30 to 10 pm. Sundays are available for private parties.
